Schizophrena is the disorder least known by youths. In fact, only 11%
had ever heard the word. This knowledge gap might be because only 1% of
the general population is afflicted with this disorder. In general, the
first symptoms appear at the end of adolesence or at the beginning of
adulthood. In order to eliminate us on this disorder, we consulted Dr.
Stéphane Kunicki, Chief of the Intensive Unit of the Louis-H. Lafontaine
Hospital. He explains that schizophrenia is a complex disorder that
alters perceptions of reality for the afflicted. Effectively, 60% of
these are auditory hallucinations (hearing voices in the absence of
external auditory stimulation). Others have visual, olfactory,
gustative, tactile or physical hallucinations. Several of these
individuals have delusions where their imagine becomes their reality.
Some of you might believe that people with schizophrenia are violent or
dangerous, however, very few actually are. In fact, the majority of
individuals suffering from schizophrenia that are indeed violent have
antisocial personality traits before they develop schizophrenia.
